There are 1.4 million adults in the U.S. who identify as transgender, where a person's perception of their gender differs from the sex assigned at birth. These patients, and those with a non-binary gender identity, may present to our offices for transgender-specific care concerns or with complaints of the ear, nose, and throat unrelated to gender identity. Otolaryngologists and office staff should learn how best to provide competent and compassionate care for patients of all gender identities. In addition, there are opportunities to expand laryngology care, voice and communication therapy, and facial gender confirmation surgery for transgender patients. This session will (a) introduce the audience to transgender patient populations, (b) discuss evidence-based approaches to create LGBTQ-friendly practices, (c) provide an overview of feminizing and masculinizing facial gender confirming procedures with case presentations (d) outline the differences in voice and communication in gender, and the role of the Speech Language Pathologist, and (e) provide an overview and pitfalls of pitch altering surgery as it complements voice therapy, with case presentations. Knowledge, experience, and perspectives on the addition of transgender care to the otolaryngology practice will be shared with the following format: Introduction to Transgender Care-Scott Chaiet Facial Gender Confirmation Surgery-Angela Sturm Communication & Voice Therapy-Richard Adler Pitch Altering Phonosurgery-Seth Dailey Questions & Answers-Facilitated by SRF At-Large Member Kristy Truong. Otolaryngologists can be leaders in LGBTQ healthcare. This session will benefit all Academy members, improve the care of transgender patients, and foster collaboration between other members on the transgender care team.
