Cough is
one of the most common complaints for which Americans seek medical care.
Cough may be a result of gastroesophageal reflux (via a
vagally-mediated reflex) or of laryngopharyngeal reflux (via direct
irritation), asthma, infections, medications, or, most commly, cigarette
smoking. Chronic Cough can also be caused by tumors or various lung
diseases. Most clinicians suggest a chest radiograph to rule out serious
lung pathology. Treatment can vary greatly based on the suspected cause
of the cough. In this module, common components of chronic cough will
be examined and reviewed.
