This
case-based course will focus on foreign body aspiration or ingestion in
children. The most common age group affected is between one and five years
old. A careful history and physical examination can help lead to the
diagnosis. Airway foreign bodies must be on the differential diagnosis for
nonspecific pulmonary symptoms such as coughing or wheezing. Many patients
with airway foreign bodies have a history of coughing, choking, or gagging;
however, as many as half of patients with an aspirated foreign body have no
contributing history.
