This miniseminar addresses controversial, but commonly encountered, issues in the management of benign and malignant parotid disease. We will review the data regarding indications, accuracy, and false-negative rates of fine-needle aspiration; capsular dissection for pleomorphic adenoma and other benign salivary tumors; superficial versus total parotidectomy for both primary malignancy and cutaneous metastases; indications for neck dissection with primary parotid malignancy; and techniques and outcomes for facial nerve and parotid bed reconstruction. This session will allow for audience interaction and appeal to general otolaryngologists, academicians, and trainees, in addition to head and neck oncological surgeons.

Description
This miniseminar addresses controversial, but commonly encountered, issues in the management of benign and malignant parotid disease. We will review the data regarding indications, accuracy, and false-negative rates of fine-needle aspiration; capsular dissection for pleomorphic adenoma and other benign salivary tumors; superficial versus total parotidectomy for both primary malignancy and cutaneous metastases; indications for neck dissection with primary parotid malignancy; and techniques and outcomes for facial nerve and parotid bed reconstruction. This session will allow for audience interaction and appeal to general otolaryngologists, academicians, and trainees, in addition to head and neck oncological surgeons.Learning Objectives: 1. Distinguish the pros and cons of fine-needle aspiration of parotid masses and capsular dissection of benign parotid tumors.2. Use an evidence-based framework to determine the indication for superficial versus total parotidectomy in malignancy and for neck dissection in the setting of parotid malignancy.3. Recognize indications for neck dissection in the setting of parotid malignancy and understand existing data surrounding facial nerve and parotid bed reconstruction.Faculty: Samir Khariwala, MD (Nothing to disclose), Carol R.
