Continuing certification (formerly known as Maintenance of Certification) has continued to be an area of significant interest and national discussions. This panel discussion will focus on informing the audience about critical, need-to-know updates on continuing board certification for otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons. The purpose and value will be discussed from the perspectives of both physicians and the public, particularly as related to the medical profession’s commitment to self-regulation. There are innovative changes occurring in the continuing certification program to best align with the program’s purpose, provide added value to diplomates, address diplomate concerns, and be compliant with new ABMS Standards. The details of these changes will be described along with how the Board and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery are collaboratively working together to maximize the program’s value. Participation and performance data will be presented. Details will be described about how feedback is being used that is responsive to the needs of the public and diplomates. The major findings from The Commission advisory report which addressed the future of continuing certification in the United States in addition to this report’s impact on new national-level standards for medical certifying bodies will be summarized to inform the discussion. This topic has relevance to the majority of practicing otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons in the United States from all subspecialty areas. Leaders from the ABOHNS and AAO-HNS will make presentations, followed by an interactive discussion with the audience.
