Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a chronic functional disorder of the nervous system, characterized by non-spinning vertigo and perceived unsteadiness. As per Staab et al. (2016), prolonged dizziness of the type seen in PPPD will develop in one out of four individuals with acute or episodic vestibular ailments such as vestibular neuritis or BPPV, making the incidence of PPPD much higher than previously recognized. Research points to the benefits of a multi-modal treatment approach for PPPD, including cognitive–behavioral therapy, vestibular rehabilitation exercises, and serotonergic medication (Axer at al., 2020). Yet how can otolaryngology clinics best assess these patients to confirm their PPPD diagnosis versus other mimickers such as vestibular migraine? What are the most up-to-date evidence-based recommendations for medication, referrals, and treatment planning? These questions and more regarding best practices for care of patients with PPPD will be explored in a lively discussion amongst experienced physical therapists and otolaryngologists during this PPPD Panel Presentation. Emphasis will be placed on the most effective ways for otolaryngologists, otologists, and neurotologists to collaborate with a vestibular rehabilitation team, encouraging supportive multidisciplinary endeavors for optimal patient outcomes when managing patients with this sometimes elusive and complicated PPPD diagnosis.
