Laryngeal Electromyography (2022 AMW)
2022 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
This course will teach the attendees basic principles of electromyography (EMG), how to perform laryngeal EMG (LEMG), how to interpret the results and how to apply these results in various clinical situations with emphasis on unilateral vocal fold paralysis and the treatment of spasmodic dysphonia. A combination of slides and video will be used to illustrate the technique. Laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) is a useful clinical tool for evaluating patients with vocal fold motion disorders and is the only technique that assesses the neurologic status of the larynx. In cases of vocal fold paralysis, LEMG provides objective data to determine which lower motor neurons may be injured and provides prognostic information that aids in counseling patients and determining appropriate management of the immobile vocal fold. Specific clinical cases are presented to illustrate the utility and limitations of the technique. LEMG is also an integral part of the treatment of spasmodic dysphonia with botulinum toxin (Botox) injections and assures that the injection needle tip is truly in a muscle. Our experience with Botox injections is described.
