Recent Research and Therapeutic Strategies for Dysphagia (2022 AMW)
2022 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
In this session, we will focus on the epidemiology, pathology, and treatment of dysphagia, and discuss treatments that can be performed in daily practice from the viewpoint of an otolaryngology clinician. In many countries, the number of patients with dysphagia is increasing with the aging of the population and the improvement in the lifesaving rate of severe diseases. In order to avoid disability of oral food intake, aspiration pneumonia, and suffocation, there is an urgent need to develop and disseminate treatments for dysphagia. Therefore, in this symposium, four otolaryngologists working on the development of dysphagia treatment will present treatment strategies based on basic research and epidemiological studies, and explain so that they can be practiced in general clinical settings. The first speaker describes characteristics of aspiration pneumonia, which greatly affects the patient's prognosis and quality of life, based on a multicenter survey in acute care hospitals. The second speaker presents recent research on the brainstem mechanisms that regulate sensorimotor coordination to better understand swallowing function. The third speaker creates a virtual reality model using computed tomography for the dynamics of swallowing organs and the transfer status of eat pieces, and describes the usefulness in diagnosis and rehabilitation of dysphagia. The final speaker will discuss the indications and effects of advanced surgical treatment and rehabilitation for dysphagia in higher medical institutions. We would like to provide the audience with the latest information on the treatment of dysphagia that will be useful in clinical settings from tomorrow.
