Techniques to Manage Airway Emergencies: A Case-Based Approach (2022 AMW)
2022 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
As Otolaryngologists, we have all been called to assist with airway problems, often after all other options have been exhausted. This panel presentation will focus on ways to both evaluate airway emergencies when they happen and decrease the occurrence of devastating airway disasters. The panel will use examples of real airway emergency situations, including angioedema, loss of airway in the operating room and a difficult airway in a code situation to demonstrate techniques that can be used “in the moment” as well as techniques that can be proactively used to refine processes. The presentation will include discussion of cognitive bias and the importance of standardization during airway emergences, the use of Safety I (how to stop things going wrong) and Safety II (reinforcing the things that went right) concepts, and methods to implement small and large system changes including Kaizen, simulation and Delphi techniques.
