Technology Based Strategies for Optimizing Management of Hyperparathyroidism (2022 AMW)
2022 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
This presentation will involve a combination of didactic and case-based presentations from acknowledged experts in endocrine surgery of the neck. Strategies for optimal management will be discussed in detail, highlighting the appropriate implementation of currently existing and evolving technology aimed at maximizing the opportunity for successful surgical treatment of hyperparathyroidism. These strategies will address various clinical presentations of hyperparathyroidism, including: primary and secondary disease; recalcitrant hyperparathyroidism; and disease associated with MEN. Detailed discussion will be focused on the following: preoperative considerations; determining the surgical approach based on various imaging modalities; planning and execution of the operation; use of surgical adjuncts intraoperatively; and the appropriate interpretation of the biochemical information provided by intraoperative parathyroid hormone assessment in determining adequacy. Opportunities for audience participation will be provided and encouraged. This team presented a one hour session “Parathyroid Imaging: Application, Advances and Innovations” at the 2021 AAOHNS meeting that was well attended and received excellent ratings and reviews. This proposed presentation will review the imaging modalities discussed in 2021 and expand on these with evolving technology developments and specific case-based applications, in order to provide practical and detailed recommendations for surgical management of patients with hyperparathyroidism. It is anticipated that this amount of information would be best delivered in a 2 hour format, if possible, to allow for thorough discussion of the nuances specific to the cases presented.
