When to Refer Patients with OSA to the Otolaryngologist? A Pro/Con Discussion of the New Aasm Practice Guideline (2022 AMW)
2022 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) is the leading professional organization for sleep medicine practitioners. A new AASM clinical practice guideline (CPG) regarding the referral of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) for surgical consultation was published in 2021. The last AASM CPG published in 2010 made recommendations regarding specific surgical procedures. The new CPG represents a sea change in the AASM's approach to surgical management of OSA, as they instead now focus on specific clinical scenarios for which a patient should be offered referral to a surgeon, acknowledging that the tools and knowledge base needed for comprehensive anatomic evaluation and patient counseling regarding the surgical experience are outside the practice boundaries of most health care providers. This program will discuss the new guidelines recommendations in a pro/con format so that participants can understand the rationale for each recommendation and share them with their referring sleep medicine colleagues.
