A common practice among surgeons is multiple room surgery, and this practice is under increasing scrutiny. The Boston Globe Spotlight Team recently featured an article describing the safety and ethics of overlapping surgeries. Subsequently, the American College of Surgeons addressed the issue, revising the ‘Intraoperative Responsibility of the Primary Surgeon’ section of its Statement on Principles, providing definitions of concurrent and overlapping surgery, and providing guidance on this practice. The AAO-HNSF performed a membership survey study this year to better understand current practices and opinions of otolaryngologists in this area. Now clearly in the public eye, the practice of multiple room surgery stands at the crossroads of patient safety, surgical education, informed consent, practice efficiency, and access to surgical care. This miniseminar will comprehensively address this important and timely topic that has practical relevance to all otolaryngologists, whether in private practice or academics. The following objectives are covered in this course: 1. Learn the latest information about overlapping/concurrent surgery in terms of definitions, guidance from the American College of Surgeons, and results of the survey study performed by the AAO-HNSF. 2. Understand the pros and cons of performing overlapping/concurrent surgeries. 3. Gain perspectives on the controversial aspects of this practice.
