Building High-Performing ENT Teams: A Data-Driven Approach to Flourishing (2023 AMW)
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
Building high-performing teams is challenging in any environment. But in high-risk, high-consequence jobs, the challenges of developing and maintaining a culture of flourishing are especially unique. We will explore how military special operations, professional + Olympic sports, and the creative arts use science-backed tools and data to train higher-performing self-awareness. We’ll discuss how “Teams of Tomorrow” in ENT surgical environments will effectively double-down on the human narrative to build world-class cultures. Part of the session will focus on the growing value of wearable sensors and biometric data as a vital part of measuring and training individual members of any OR team that engages in “high performance” medicine. These devices provide feedback loops to re-train management of the autonomic nervous system in order to be self aware, adapt to stress, and recover more smartly. This segment of the talk will also touch on “Operator Syndrome”, allostatic load, and how high-risk teams in special operations and first responders use such data to avoid burnout in the talent they’ve so deeply invested in. Part of the session will also focus on the broader concept of physician well-being. This acknowledges that we need comprehensive, systematic, and sustained efforts to improve well-being. These efforts will be most effective when they address the key drivers of physician well-being from each of three reciprocally related domains, extending beyond personal resilience to factor in aspects of practice efficiency and a culture of wellness.
