Expanding Humanitarian Medical Educational Outreach Using Bidirectional Approaches (2023 AMW)
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
Increasingly, training programs around the globe are developing collaborative medical educational programs that include opportunities for trainees to receive experiences outside the usual confines of their home training program. In the past, these experiences were mainly unidirectional. A significant challenge to creating effective and sustainable global medical educational collaborations is ensuring ongoing training options that also provide a global perspective in approach. A bi-directional or a “trainee swap” between home and collaborative countries is an effective way to train medical providers. To be successful, appropriate input from both training programs is required in developing processes, as well as setting expectations, and developing competency metrics. This seminar will address issues central to the development of bi-directional global education programs and provide a guide to allow educators to successfully implement this type of educational activity.
