Great Debates: Mucous Wars (2023 AMW)
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
Mucous is a common offender among otolaryngology complaints. The etiology can be very clear in some patients such as acute viral rhinitis, allergic rhinitis or acute sinusitis. More recently, GERD or laryngopharyngeal acid reflux has been deemed a common culprit in the more obscure cases of mucous production. How does one elucidate the etiology of this phantom mucus? The purpose of this debate is to pose a challenge between a rhinologist, Dr. Sandra Lin, and laryngologist, Dr. Thomas Carroll, on the evaluation and management of patients presenting with mucus. The goal will be to assist audience members with developing a wider differential and a method to work-up these challenging patients.
