Orofacial clefting has an incidence of 1/700 worldwide. Cleft lip and/or palate and other craniofacial anomalies can be divided into syndromic and non-syndromic. Newborns in these situations may have a number of functional and anatomical abnormalities that can affect feeding, cause airway obstruction, or result in a referred newborn hearing screen. While newborns at hospitals with multi-disciplinary cleft and craniofacial teams may have experts readily available to help manage these complex issues, these infants are often born in locations that do not have cleft or craniofacial experts, and general otolaryngologists may be the experts called upon to manage the feeding and swallowing issues, an infant in respiratory distress, or how to determine next steps for hearing screening. This miniseminar will provide the participant a perspective on how a general otolaryngologist can manage a newborn with cleft or craniofacial anomalies. Difficult cases will also be presented. Audience touchpad interaction will facilitate discussion. The format will include presentations including airway management in an infant with Robin Sequence, feeding management in a newborn with cleft lip and palate, and hearing screening and management in a newborn with microtia. Experts in speech therapy and audiology will offer insight on management of these patients. This forum supports the goals of the new AAO-HNS Cleft and Craniofacial committee made up of pediatric otolaryngology and the facial plastic surgery subspecialties.
