Surgical Video Production: The Science Behind Creating Quality Educational Content (2023 AMW)
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
Video demonstration of surgery techniques has become a staple of modern surgical education for medical students and trainees. A variety of content is available through student forums, published journals, social media and online resources. However, the mode of presentation, length of video, and details provided are not consistent among resources and frequently do not capture educational principles designed for today’s student. Thus, the production of high yield surgical videos requires a practical approach aimed to hold an observer’s attention with concentrated material and a quality video experience. This panel of experts in education and surgery video production will outline the strategies to create high quality videos of surgical procedures for students, trainees, and other expert surgeons. Principles in video education, techniques in efficient production, software tips, and editing approaches will be incorporated in the presentation and provide the audience the framework and tools to produce high caliber surgical content. Each panel member brings a mastery in video production and education with years of experience of surgical video editing. Specific guidelines for length and order of material presented will be discussed in terms of optimizing audience retention. Similarly, strategies to upload, promote, and improve viewership will be addressed. This panel aims to fulfill a need for education in the creation of truly high-quality video content by academicians and private practice surgeons alike.
