Transition to Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) in Otolaryngology (2023 AMW)
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
Current Otolaryngology training models in the United States are often unstructured and time-based. They lack emphasis on ACGME-recommended entrustable professional activities (EPAs) and Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME), meant to objectively ensure trainees possess specialty-specific knowledge and can competently perform specialty-specific skills prior to graduation. This is in contrast to the standard 5-year model supported only by case logs and unstandardized feedback, which may be prone to bias. This program aims to explore the foundations of CBME, reasons for the important shift towards CBME, and the current steps that are being taken to standardize Otolaryngology curriculums. There will be a focus on what residents and programs can expect in the years to come regarding both residency education and assessment.
