YO-IFOS: Introduction to a New International Partnership for Young Otolaryngologists (2023 AMW)
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
At the 2017 IFOS (International Federation of Otorhinolaryngological Societies) World ENT Meeting in Paris, a group of international young otolaryngologists composed of residents in training, fellows, and young attendings came together to create the Young Otolaryngologist group within IFOS. The goal of YO-IFOS was to bring together ENT trainees and junior faculty from all over the world to fulfill 5 main missions: education, research development, sustainability, effective networking and team building, and meeting organization. Since its creation, the YO-IFOS group has published over 240 peer reviewed papers (e.g. multicenter prospective studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, cross-sectional surveys and guidelines) and was the first international group to report the association between new onset anosmia and Covid-19 at the beginning of the pandemic in 2019. This dynamic group was able to design and complete a multicentric international prospective study in just 3 weeks, and their results significantly improved the general understanding of Covid-19 pathophysiology when it was most needed. YO-IFOS members are powered by deep commitment to developing international collaborations, dynamic approaches to new learning tools, and advancing the field of otolaryngology for our patients. The example of YO-IFOS may be reproductible, while the experiences of the 4 past years of this association may help young organizations of otolaryngologists to quickly achieve their research and educational goals.
