Catching the Runny Nose (2023 AMW) Session
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Rhinorrhea is one of the most common symptoms seen in an otolaryngology office. Treatment has become more advanced in recent years with the advent of procedures touted for the treatment of rhinorrhea and rhinitis. This program will go through the pathophysiology of rhinorrhea before exploring the differential diagnoses, workup, medical, and surgical treatment options for the various causes of rhinorrhea. The program will include rhinitis, both allergic and nonallergic, postnasal drip, and cerebrospinal fluid leak. For rhinitis, it will include the pros and cons of each treatment option and will include a discussion describing the risks, benefits, and outcomes. Demonstration of the different surgical techniques along with the devices on the market will be presented. Furthermore, a comprehensive review of the literature on the various treatment options will be presented to help participants select the appropriate procedure for each individual patient. Postnasal drip will be explored, as this is an often frustrating problem for patients and providers alike. The appropriate workup and treatment options will be discussed. Cerebrospinal fluid leak will be thoroughly explored as well, focusing on spontaneous leaks and their workup and repair. Finally, proper methods of coding for all of the procedures discussed will be included.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Differentiate the unique forms of rhinorrhea and the appropriate workup for this condition.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Analyze the patient with postnasal drip, perform the appropriate exam and workup, and provide treatment options.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Implement surgical options for rhinitis in your practice for the appropriate patients.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Need for treatment algorithms for patients with rhinitis. Differentiate those patients best treated with surgical procedures and those managed medically. Navigate the data in the literature, mostly driven by industry, into an unbiased opinion of realistic patient outcomes with treatment.
