Focused Practice Designation (FPD), Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery, ABS/ABOHNS (2023 AMW) Session
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Despite intense competition from other surgical specialists, thyroid and parathyroid surgery has become an important part of many otolaryngologists’ practices. The continued success of Otolaryngologist – Head and Neck surgeons in this area of practice depends on our training and recognition of our skills and outcomes by patients and referring providers. A Focused Practice Designation (FPD) for Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery has been approved by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. This represents an opportunity for otolaryngologists whose practices include an emphasis in thyroid/parathyroid surgery to demonstrate their expertise in this area. This panel will discuss the latest details of the FPD process to include its requirements and time line for implementation. All board certified and board eligible Otolaryngologists-Head and Neck Surgeons should attend this panel.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Recognize the changing landscape for ABMS recognition of Board certified surgeons who have a practice focus in thyroid and parathyroid surgery.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Explain the significance of the focused practice designation (FPD) and its potential impact upon practicing otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Demonstrate the importance of FPD participation to maintain the thyroid and parathyroid surgery focus as part of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Members of the AAOHNS need to be aware of the upcoming FPD in Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery, determine the applicability to their practice, and consider whether to pursue this added recognition to their Board certification in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
