PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This panel discussion will explain the diversity of presentations surrounding laryngeal dysfunction after thyroid and parathyroid surgery. The panel will discuss the role of early recognition, laryngeal examination and treatment for patients with concern based upon intraoperative findings and/or symptoms. Laryngeal dysfunction after thyroid and parathyroid surgery may present as voice, swallow, cough, globus and everything in between. This session will host a few cases that present representative and nuanced examples of laryngeal dysfunction after surgery and how examination and treatment may be initiatedOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Explain various forms of laryngeal dysfunction that may present after thyroid and parathyroid surgeryOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Demonstrate the next steps in assessment of laryngeal dysfunction and what types of diagnostics are required to do soOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Analyze different treatment options based upon guideline recommendationsBACKGROUND STATEMENT: Laryngeal dysfunction takes many forms after thyroid and parathyroid surgery. The spectrum of case presentations that exist should be noted and identified, so that they are appropriately addressed to improve quality of life and outcomes.
