Treatment of Parapharyngeal Tumors, Including Enucleation of Vagal Schwannomas (2023 AMW) Session
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This course will review "lessons learned" from my experience in treating over 400 patients with tumors of the parapharyngeal space. Relevant Anatomy will be emphasized to help the participant feel comfortable in approaching the parapharyngeal space from either the trans-cervical or the trans-oral approach. Indications for each approach will be reviewed with each case presented. Treatment options for common salivary, vascular, and neurogenic tumor, as well as more rare lesions in this region, will be discussed, including the indications and techniques for enucleation of schwannomas of the head and neck. Multiple cases including intra-opertive surgical photos, and detailed surgical videos, will be presented to lead the participant to a much greater understanding of the anatomy, and hopefully an increased comfort level in performing surgery on tumors in this region.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Review and understand the complex anatomy of the para-pharyngeal spaceOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Based on the anatomical review, compare the pros and cons of the various approaches to the para- pharyngeal spaceOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Analyze the treatment options of common and rare tumors and congenital lesions of the para-pharyngeal space.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: As I lecture on this topic I am amazed at the lack of experience in this area and the poor outcomes that are shared with me from inexperience surgeons. This course is designed to educate the academy member to improve their judgement and skills .
