Advanced Cochlear Implantation: Obstructed and Malformed (2023 AMW) Session
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: With advances in cochlear implant technology and surgical techniques, this life changing device has become available to patients from whom such intervention would previously have been considered contraindicated. This is particularly true for patients with ossified and congenitally malformed cochleae. However, with improved understanding and anatomy and operative technique, patients can and have benefited from implantation. This session, presented by world experts with decades of experience, will review the radiology, surgery, risks, complications, and post-operative programming issues that are essential to maximizing outcomes. By the end of this session, attendees will feel more comfortable providing cochlear implantation to this challenging but rewarding patient population.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Explain cochlear anatomy beyond the round window, both normal and abnormal.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Review surgical tips and pearls to allow for maximized electrode insertion in ossified and malformed cochlea.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Summarize the relevant programming challenges that come with this unique patient population.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Need to educate surgeons on techniques to optimize cochlear implant outcomes in patients with malformed and ossified cochleae, a challenging but rewarding endeavor for a patient populations previously believed to be inoperable.
