PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Patients with cleft lip and/or palate are commonly encountered in both general ENT practices as well as subspecialty clinics. As such, a familiarity with the etiology, common problems and recommended management should be a component of every ENT's practice. This lecture will cover the comprehensive care of clefts with a focus on those things encountered in private practice and what can be handled by any well-trained ENT and what should be referred for subspecialty care.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Become aware of the etiology and different manifestations of cleft lip and palate.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Understand the common ENT challenges found in patients with cleft lip and/or palate. Become familiar with cleft diagnosis and management.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Know the current medical literature on the otolaryngic management of cleftsBACKGROUND STATEMENT: There is a need for up to date understanding of cleft care and empowerment of general ENTs to participate in cleft care as well as understand the complex care that is also required by subspecialists.
