Ear Pressure and Pain (2023 AMW) Session
2023 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Vague complaints can be the most frustrating for both the patient and physician. This session will start with a simple complaint of ear pressure or pain and review all possible etiologies associated with these complaints. We will present a cost-effective method for evaluation of these common complaints. Topics covered will include eustachian tube dysfunction, patulous eustachian tube, cochlear hydrops, migraine, bullous myringitis, TMJ syndrome, and otic neuralgia. The pathophysiology of these disorders will be reviewed and with disease-specific treatment discussed. Participants will be encouraged to actively contribute to the discussion through questions and their own case presentations.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Outline how to quickly assess ear pressure and pain symptoms and form a comprehensive differential diagnosis.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Formulate a cost-effective evaluation routine for ear pressure and pain patients with normal otoscopy.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Describe how to quickly triage patients with vague ear complaints.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: This has been a very popular AAO course since we first presented about 10 years ago. This is a very common complaint to the general ENT community. We have received great feedback and great scores over the years. We continue to revise the course based on input from participants.
