PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Chronic otorrhea, arising from either a middle ear or external ear source, is a common problem for many patients and a common reason for patients to seek an otolaryngologist. This session will review common and unusual diseases of the external and middle ear. We will present a comprehensive and cost-effective work up algorithm for patients with chronic otorrhea. We will review currently-approved FDA medications that may be used for chronic otorrhea. Unconventional treatments, including topical powders, will also be discussed. Literature supporting non-FDA approved therapies will be presented alongside clinical examplesOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Discuss common conditions of the external and middle ear causing refractory otorrhea, highlighting simple and refractory treatment options.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Identify currently-approved FDA topical medications for treatment of external and middle ear disease.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Review the literature and practice experience with non-FDA approved therapies for external and middle ear disease.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: The academy has identified chronic ear disease, cholesteatoma, and otorrhea as learning gaps. These are common complaints of patients seeking comprehensive otolaryngology care. This course has been presented the past several AAO meetings with good reviews.
