Catastrophic complications occur infrequently in thyroid surgery but can be devastating to the patient. This course is intended to help the otolaryngologist pursue a safe thyroidectomy that minimizes 5 disastrous complications such as airway obstruction and death. In addition, the full spectrum of potential major complications will be comprehensively discussed and practical solutions and maneuvers to minimize their likelihood will be offered.

Learning Objective: 1. Identify 5 catastrophic complications potentially encountered during thyroid surgery. 2. Discuss other major complications of thyroid surgery and ways to reduce their likelihood. 3. Implement safe practices to minimize the risk of catastrophic complications in thyroid surgery.
