Burnout to Wellbeing and Work Life Integration (AMW) Session
2021 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
I am grateful to have had almost a decade of annual opportunities to speak on first the topic of physician and clinician burnout in otolaryngology, then in recent years transition from burnout to wellbeing as a mirror to my own journey. Most recently I authored the inaugural chapter on burnout to wellbeing for the 6th edition of Bailey's, and currently serve on the AAOHNS task force/committee on Wellness initiative. This instruction course will continue to focus on helping otolaryngology trainees, faculty, and allied members to develop self-awareness, actual actionable changes that will increase individual wellbeing and subsequent organization and group wellbeing. Each year the course is updated with most current evidence-based information and "Stories" that will inspire behavioral changes. Instead of "work-life balance", the new and more realistic term is "work-life integration". This course will continue to connect attendees so that they become aware they are not alone and normalize such prevalent experience many surgeons have through their career as all face struggles professionally and personally.
Description
Learning Objective: 1. Identify actionable changes after developing self awareness, accept accountability, and be inspired to move from moderate or high degree of burnout to increased individual wellbeing. 2. Recognize critical mandate and what defines self-care, and components necessary to experience and manage stress in a constructive way that leads to better work-life integration. 3. Learn impact to being well on others and all dimensions of wellbeing, and ability to then provide peer support. Faculty: Julie Wei, MD(Nothing to Disclose).
