Chronic Ear Surgery: Surgical Techniques and Avoidance of Complication (AMW)
2021 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
This program will discuss chronic ear surgery. The surgical treatment of patients with chronic ear disease requires knowledge of various surgical techniques that can be modified to match specific patient pathology. A well-prepared surgeon will utilize atriotomy, intact canal wall or canal wall down procedures in combination with lateral graft, medial graft, or hybrid tympanic membrane grafting techniques. Graft material utilized can carry certain advantages and disadvantages as can transcanal endoscopic or microscopic techniques. Surgeons prepared to use a breadth of surgical techniques will be better able to tailor treatment to the needs of the patient. Avoidance of complications in chronic ear surgery involves appropriate preoperative assessment and patient selection, an in-depth understanding of anatomy, capable surgical technique, and consideration of utilizing facial nerve monitoring. This program will demonstrate through video case series presentations key relevant surgical techniques that can be employed to perform chronic ear surgery safely and successfully.
