Cochlear Implantation - Learning from the Masters (AMW)
2021 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
Cochlear Implantation (CI) surgery has revolutionized the field of hearing rehabilitation. With rapidly evolving technological advancements, it is of utmost importance to keep ourselves abreast of what’s new. Though the surgery has been known for around half a decade, it is still perceived as one of the most delicate and challenging otological procedures performed. This symposium aims at discussing in great detail the following aspects targeting the budding CI surgeons: Pre-operative evaluation and candidacy; Patient and device selection; Surgical techniques – tips from the Masters – “What and How To Do and Not To Do”??; How to deal with malformed ears; Complications: common and not-so-common; Special considerations; Impact on cognition in adult and pediatric cochlear implantees. Our panel of speakers comprises of prominent Otolaryngologists from India, proficient in different surgical techniques, working in high volume centres. The special focus of discussion will be on surgical considerations – surgical aspects of the popular techniques, endaural vs post-aural incision, round window vs cochleostomy insertion, surgical complications and how to avoid and deal with them, special cases etc. The objective of the symposium is to answer the key questions faced by new implant surgeons and discuss the surgical nitty gritties, to help them to be prepared to face surgical challenges in their own practice. The presenters will also discuss the various devices available and the latest technological advancements, which are key for device selection and counselling of the parents/caregivers. We hope the activity will be an exciting holistic package especially for the budding CI surgeons.
