Emerging Foreign Body Hazards of the Upper Aerodigestive Tract (AMW)
2021 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
This session will update general otolaryngologists on the newer and greatest hazards that are ingested by infants and children in recent years. These include small high-powered magnets, grill brush bristle wires, detergent liquids and pods, and button batteries. Evidence-based, contemporary endoscopic management and removal of foreign bodies from the aero-digestive tract and clinical cases will be reviewed. The clinical presentation and mechanism of injury for all hazards will be discussed, as well as their appropriate surgical management. The comprehensive management of button battery ingestions, including new mitigation strategies that all otolaryngologists need to be aware of as they are now recommended by the National Capital Poison Center Guidelines. These strategies include the pre-removal use of honey and/or sucralfate to slow the rate of esophageal button battery injury, as well as the post-removal use of 0.25% sterile acetic acid irrigation to neutralize tissue ph. National advocacy efforts to reduce foreign body hazard related injuries in children will be discussed.
