Management of Non-Allergic Rhinitis from Medications to Surgical Intervention (AMW)
2021 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
Non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) is a prevalent condition impacting an estimated 200 million people worldwide. Optimal management of NAR begins with a thorough history and physical as prescription and non-prescription medications are common underlying causes of rhinitis symptoms. Medical management with nasal sprays is generally successful in controlling NAR symptoms. However, medical management failures do occur, and some patients wish to avoid daily medication use. New technologies for the ablation of the posterior nasal nerve (PNN) via cryotherapy or radiofrequency have recently been introduced into the marketplace. Additionally, surgical management including posterior nasal neurectomy and vidian neurectomy has become more effective and safer with improvement in the technology surrounding endoscopic sinonasal surgery. This session will move through the initial evaluation of a patient with NAR, selection and initiation of medical management, and selection of procedural/surgical candidates with discussion and video demonstrations of ablative and surgical posterior nasal neurectomy and vidian neurectomy.
