Medical Management of Thyroid Disease for Otolaryngologists (AMW)
2021 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
This course will review contemporary medical management of thyroid disease for otolaryngologists, including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, nodular thyroid disease, and thyroid cancer, as well as postoperative calcium/parathyroid management. Specifically, the various thyroid hormone therapy preparation options (levothyroxine LT4, liothyronine LT3, combined synthetic or animal T3/T4) will be discussed along with advantages and disadvantages of each. Preoperative management of Graves' and toxic nodular goiter will be addressed. The workup and management of thyroid nodules will be emphasized, including sonographic assessment, cytology, and updates on molecular testing. Postoperative thyroid cancer management, including TSH suppression, Radioiodine, and surveillance will be presented along with updates on new targeted chemotherapy options. Otolaryngologists are often involved in multi-disciplinary management of thyroid disease and this course is designed to expand their fund of knowledge to optimize patient care, improve communication with endocrinologists and primary care physicians, and develop expertise in management of thyroid disease.
