Narrative Medicine and Reflective Writing in Otolaryngology (AMW)
2021 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
Narrative sits at the intersection of medicine and the rest of life. Patients and families create narratives surrounding their illnesses, and caregivers bring their own stories to the clinic, the operating room, and the bedside. This session will introduce Narrative Medicine (as currently being explored at Columbia University) and provide resources and examples to allow the participants to explore this expanding field of study. In addition, the session will provide techniques for narrative reflection and lead the participants through a writing exercise. The resources and techniques are relevant to otolaryngology trainees and practitioners, particularly as they deal with ambiguous and stressful events at work and in life.
