Revision Sinus Surgery: Keys to Success (AMW)
2021 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience
Endoscopic sinus surgery is one of the most performed procedures by otolaryngologists across the world. As the prevalence of cases of sinus surgery increases, so does the number of cases that might require revision surgery. The need for revision can occur for several reasons, including suboptimal healing, disease subtype and progression and technical error. Distorted and unpredictable anatomy may be a source of confusion for the otolaryngologist who undertakes revision sinus surgery and should form the basis for a modified approach that differs in substantial ways from the approach to native sinuses. This expert lecture will present various endoscopic and radiographic findings that should be appreciated by the revision sinus surgeon. The impact of chronic rhinosinusitis subtypes on the indications and extent of revision surgery will be reviewed. Numerous case examples will be presented to illustrate the importance of these findings. The presentation will include discussion of technical maneuvers that can be employed at the time of primary sinus surgery to prevent the need for revision surgery.
