Despite intense competition from other surgical specialists, thyroid and parathyroid surgery has become an important part of many otolaryngologists’ practices. The continued success of Otolaryngologist – Head and Neck surgeons in this area of practice depends on our training and recognition of our skills and outcomes by patients and referring providers. A Focused Practice Designation (FPD) for Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery has been approved by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. This represents an opportunity for otolaryngologists whose practices include an emphasis in thyroid/parathyroid surgery to demonstrate their expertise in this area. This panel will discuss the latest details of the FPD process to include its requirements and time line for implementation.
